Unlike many of the better-known carotenoids such as beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene, which come from plant sources, astaxanthin comes from marine sources - primarily from micro-algae. It is a xanthophylls carotenoid, meaning that it does not convert to vitamin A, but has antioxidant properties in its own right. Astaxanthin is both fat and water soluble and as such has widespread antioxidant potential in the body. In addition to being a potent antioxidant in its own right, it has also been shown to recycle other antioxidants including vitamins C, E, lutein, beta-carotene and glutathione, further enhancing its overall antioxidant effect.
