Diabetes Mellitus
Description
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder usually caused by
a deficient secretion of insulin produced by the pancreas.
Even though the amount of glucose circulating in the blood
is high, the amount absorbed by the tissues is low (insulin
resistant). Heredity, diet and Obesity are major risk factors.
Diabetes mellitus is divided
into two types: Type I-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
(IDDM) where insulin is crucial; and Type II-non-insulin
dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) where insulin is not
required.
Due to the serious
nature of the condition it is better to visit a health professional
for personal advice on nutritional support. |
