September 7th – 13th 2008 is Migraine Awareness Week.

Migraine is a complex neurological condition which affects over six million people in the UK.
Migraine is a great deal more than just a headache; it is the most common neurological condition in the developed world.

Migraine affects people in different ways with varying symptoms, frequency and duration of attacks and numerous trigger factors such as food, changing sleep patterns, hormonal changes in women, head and neck pain, travel and stress.

Attacks can be completely disabling, forcing the sufferer to abandon everyday activities for up to 3 days. The pain can be all over or may only affect one side of the head. It can stay in one place or shift. The pain is often made worse by movement and people are likely to become sensitive to light or certain smells. Once a migraine has gone, some people can feel washed-out and lethargic.

There are treatments available which can be very effective.

Headache Free

Headache Free is a multivitamin and headache-preventative supplement in one tablet. Headache Free combines 400mg of riboflavin and 400mg of magnesium with a complete food-based multivitamin to provide a natural alternative to help with the prevention and management of headaches.

There was a well-known study by Schoenen J, Jacquy J and Lenaerts M published over ten years ago in the journal Neurology regarding the B vitamin riboflavin. Fifty-five patients with migraine were randomly assigned to receive either 400 mg a day of riboflavin or placebo for three months. The riboflavin group at the end of the three months had a statistically significant improvement in the migraine frequency.

Butterbur

There is another interesting nutrient that has been shown to reduce migraine and this is the herbal supplement butterbur. Feverfew

Feverfew has a traditional use that dates back to Ancient Greece. Oregons Wild Harvest believe that the whole herb (with all the natural constituents) is more beneficial than extracts that are standardised to selected constituents.

Feverfew has traditionally been used for reducing fever, for treating pain associated with headaches, migraines and arthritis. The active ingredients in feverfew include parthenolide and tanetin. It may take four to six weeks before they become effective. Feverfew suppresses inflammation occurring in the cerebral blood vessels, which is believed to contribute to migraine headache symptoms.
